Belize has achieved full membership in the World Health Organization Programme for International Drug Monitoring (PIDM), an important step in strengthening medicines safety and public-health protection in the country. The milestone was announced with support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).
Why this matters
Membership in the PIDM connects Belize more closely to the international pharmacovigilance network coordinated through the Uppsala Monitoring Centre. It helps the country detect, assess and report adverse drug reactions and other medicine-related safety issues more effectively.
Belize’s progress reflects sustained work by the Ministry of Health and Wellness to strengthen regulatory oversight, pharmacovigilance systems and post-marketing surveillance of medical products.
Benefits for the health system
By participating more fully in global medicine-safety reporting, Belize can contribute local information to broader safety monitoring efforts and also benefit from international signal detection and analysis. That helps support better-informed responses to product-quality concerns, adverse events and emerging risks.
For healthcare providers, importers, wholesalers and pharmacies, stronger pharmacovigilance reinforces the importance of clear reporting pathways, traceability and ongoing cooperation with public-health authorities.
